What is private transport to Ouzoud?

This offer is simply the car and the driver. A private vehicle picks up your group in Marrakech around 8:00, drives about three hours to the Ouzoud Waterfalls, and waits while you spend three to four hours at the falls on your own. You are back in Marrakech in the early evening. The price is per vehicle for your whole group: €180 for 1 to 7 people, €250 for 8 to 17.

It suits travellers who like to explore at their own pace, people who have read up on the site, and anyone returning to Ouzoud.

Driver or guide: what is the difference?

This is the question we are asked most, so here is a clear answer.

Driver (this offer) Local guide (option or tour)
Role Drives you from Marrakech and back Walks with you at the falls
Where In the vehicle and at the car On the paths, viewpoints and terraces
Explains the site No, that is not his job Yes: paths, mills, macaques, history
Helps with the boat and lunch Can point you in the right direction Takes you there and helps you choose
Included Always In the private Ouzoud tour and premium day, or as an option here

The driver is a professional driver working for a licensed transport company. His job is to get you there and back safely and on time. He does not walk the site with you and he is not presented as a guide. If you want commentary and someone on foot with you, add a local guide or choose the guided tour.

What can you do on your own at Ouzoud?

View over the Ouzoud gorge, the falls and the pools below
Wide view of the three tiers of the Ouzoud Waterfalls from the opposite bank

Three to four hours is a comfortable amount of time. Here is what most visitors manage alone:

  • Walk down to the foot of the falls. A paved path lined with terrace cafés and craft stalls goes down in about 20 minutes. It has steps and slopes, so wear shoes with grip.
  • See the falls from above. Before going down, walk to the upper viewpoints for the full 110 m drop in three tiers.
  • Take the boat ride. Small rafts take visitors close to the base of the falls. You can add it to your booking for €5 per person.
  • Eat on a terrace. Restaurants by the water serve tajines and mint tea. Lunch takes about an hour.
  • Watch the macaques. Barbary macaques live around the falls. They are an endangered species, and feeding them harms their health and behaviour, so watch from a distance and keep food in your bag.
  • Cross to the other bank. Paths run on both sides of the gorge. Going down one side and up the other gives a different view, but allow extra time.

If that sounds like a lot to organise alone, the private Ouzoud tour adds a guide who handles the route.

Is transport only right for you?

Choose the private driver if most of these sound like you:

  • You are comfortable finding your way on a well-used path without explanations.
  • You would rather set your own pace than follow someone.
  • You have visited Ouzoud before, or read our Ouzoud travel guide.
  • You are happy to say no politely to offers on the path, and to choose a restaurant yourself if you did not add lunch.

If you hesitate on two or more points, the private Ouzoud tour is probably a better fit: same vehicle, same day, plus a local guide for the walk.

How do you explore Ouzoud safely without a guide?

A few simple habits make the day easier. Wear shoes with grip, as the steps near the water can be wet. Keep an eye on children close to the edges and at the foot of the falls. Do not hand food to the macaques and keep snacks in a closed bag, since they are used to being fed and can grab. Agree a realistic meeting time with the driver, keeping in mind that the climb back up takes longer than the way down. In summer, some visitors swim in the pools downstream; if you do, judge the conditions yourself and stay away from the strong current under the falls.

Which options can you add?

  • Local guide at the falls, €40 per group for 1 to 7 people or €80 for 8 to 17: someone from the area meets you on arrival and leads the walk. More on what a local guide does.
  • Boat ride, €5 per person: booked in advance and included in your total.
  • Lunch, €30 per person: a meal on a terrace by the falls. Tell us about dietary needs, such as vegetarian, when you book. See boat and lunch.

Tick the options you want in the booking form and it shows one total price. For example, two people with the boat ride and lunch pay €180 + 2 x €5 + 2 x €30 = €250. With all three options, the premium private day is usually the simpler formula.

How does the day work with the driver?

On arrival, the driver parks near the top of the site and agrees a meeting time and place with you. Save his phone number. Walk down, enjoy the falls, and come back up at the agreed time. If someone in the group is tired and wants to return earlier, you can head back to the vehicle and wait there.

Frequently asked questions

Does the driver guide us at the falls?

No. On the private transport offer, the driver is a driver, not a tour guide. He takes you to Ouzoud, agrees a meeting time with you and stays with the vehicle while you explore. If you want someone to walk with you and show you the paths and viewpoints, add a local guide as an option or choose the private Ouzoud tour.

How much free time do we get at Ouzoud?

You have about three to four hours at the falls. That is enough to walk down to the foot of the falls, take the boat ride, have lunch on a terrace and climb back up without rushing. You agree the exact meeting time with the driver when you arrive, depending on your pickup time and the season.

Can we visit Ouzoud on our own without a guide?

Yes. A paved path with terrace cafés leads down to the foot of the falls in about 20 minutes, and it is easy to follow. Paths also run along both banks. Many visitors explore alone. A guide becomes useful if you want to see both banks, find the quieter viewpoints or visit with young children. Read what a local guide does.

What options can we add to the private transport?

Three options: a local guide at the falls for the walk and viewpoints (€40 per group for 1 to 7 people, €80 for 8 to 17), the boat ride at the foot of the falls (€5 per person) and lunch on a terrace by the water (€30 per person). Tick them in the booking form and the total updates. With all three, the premium private day is the simpler choice.

Will people approach us offering to guide us?

It can happen. Informal local guides are common at Ouzoud and may offer their services on the path. A polite no is enough if you prefer to walk alone. If you would like a guide, it is simpler to add one when you book, for €40 per group (1 to 7 people), so the price is fixed in advance and included in your total.

Is the private transport cheaper than the guided tour?

Yes, because it does not include the guide. Private transport costs €180 per vehicle for 1 to 7 people and €250 for 8 to 17, against €220 and €330 for the private Ouzoud tour with a local guide. Adding the guide option to the transport gives the same total as the tour. All prices are on our prices page.

Can we change the meeting time once we are at the falls?

Within reason, yes. Tell the driver as early as possible if you want a little more or less time, and keep in mind the three-hour drive back to Marrakech. The driver has his phone with him, so you can reach him from the site. We suggest saving his number at the start of the day.

Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls in Marrakech or in the Ourika Valley?

Neither. Ouzoud is in Azilal Province, about 150 to 160 km north-east of Marrakech, so you need a full day and a vehicle to get there. The waterfalls of the Ourika Valley, at Setti Fatma, are a different and much closer place. Our trips leave from Marrakech, with pickup at your hotel or at the medina gate nearest to your riad.

Is there a bus from Marrakech to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

There is no direct bus to the falls. Travellers going by public transport usually take a bus or shared grand taxi towards Azilal, then a local taxi for the last part to Ouzoud, which takes much of the day and depends on local timetables. It works for flexible travellers; for a day trip from Marrakech, a private vehicle with driver is far simpler and lets you spend 3 to 4 hours at the falls.

Can I take a taxi from Marrakech to Ouzoud?

City taxis in Marrakech are not made for a 300 km return trip, and a grand taxi hired for the day still needs to be negotiated and does not include waiting time or local knowledge. Our private transport is the organised version of that idea: a licensed tourist vehicle, a driver who waits at Ouzoud while you visit, and a fixed price of €180 for up to 7 people, shown before you pay.

Can I drive to Ouzoud myself, and is there parking?

Yes. The usual route leaves Marrakech on the N8, then follows regional roads to Ouzoud; road numbers can differ between maps, so follow signs for Azilal and Ouzoud. Count about three hours each way. There are parking areas near the top of the site, where attendants usually ask a small fee. With a private driver you avoid the drive and the parking, and can rest on the way back.

What is there to see between Marrakech and Ouzoud?

The road crosses the Haouz plain and climbs into the first hills of the High Atlas, through farming villages and olive groves. Most travellers simply stop for coffee or photos on the way, which we do on request. Longer detours, such as the Bin El Ouidane reservoir or the natural arch of Imi n'Ifri near Demnate, add time to an already full day; ask us before booking and we will tell you what is realistic.
