Frequently asked questions

How do I book a private Ouzoud trip from Marrakech?

Book online: choose your offer, date, number of travellers and options in our form, and it shows the total for your group. You pay a 50% deposit by PayPal or bank card through PayPal, and your booking is confirmed by email straight away. For questions first, write to us on WhatsApp at +212 661 454 738. See how to book.

How much does a private trip to Ouzoud cost?

Our price is per vehicle for your whole group, not per person. Private transport costs €180 for 1 to 7 people or €250 for 8 to 17; the guided tour €220 or €330; the premium day €220 or €330 plus €35 per person. For example, four people on the guided tour pay €220, so €55 each. Full list on our prices page.

How do I pay for the trip?

You pay a 50% deposit online when you book, by PayPal or by bank card through PayPal, and your booking is confirmed by email straight away. The balance is paid in cash to your driver on the day of the trip. The total shown in the form is the total for your trip; only tips, drinks and personal purchases are extra.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before the trip, and the deposit is refunded in full. For a later cancellation or a no-show, the deposit is not refunded. If weather makes the trip unsafe, for example a storm or a closed road, you choose between a new date and a full refund of the deposit.

Is the trip really private?

Yes. The vehicle and the driver are for your group only: no other travellers join you and there are no stops at other hotels. On the guided and premium offers, the local guide at Ouzoud is also with your group. The day follows your pace, within the usual timing of the trip.

Where do you pick us up in Marrakech?

We pick you up at your hotel entrance in Marrakech, for example in Guéliz, Hivernage, Palmeraie or Agdal. If you stay in a riad inside the medina, cars cannot enter the lanes, so we meet you at the nearest gate or car park the vehicle can reach. Your driver confirms the exact point; see riad pickup.

Can you pick us up from a riad in the medina?

Yes, at the nearest gate or car park the vehicle can reach, such as Bab Doukkala, Bab Agnaou or Place des Ferblantiers, depending on your quarter. Many riads send someone to walk guests to the car. Give us your riad name and address when you book and your driver confirms the meeting point the day before.

What time does the Ouzoud day trip start and finish?

Pickup is usually around 8:00, with the exact time confirmed after booking. The drive takes about 3 hours each way, you spend around 3 to 4 hours at the falls, and you are back in Marrakech in the early evening. Timing can shift slightly with traffic and your pace on site.

How far is Ouzoud from Marrakech?

The Ouzoud Waterfalls are about 150 to 160 km north-east of Marrakech, in Azilal Province in the central High Atlas. The drive takes about 3 hours each way by road. That is why the trip is a full day, with around 3 to 4 hours at the falls.

What vehicles do you use?

We use a 7-seat minivan for groups of 1 to 7 people and a 17-seat minibus for groups of 8 to 17. The vehicle is chosen by the size of your group and is used only by your group for the whole day.

Is the Ouzoud trip suitable for children?

Yes, children are welcome and many families do this trip. Tell us the ages when you book so we can plan the walk and the stops. The paths have steps and slopes, so pushchairs are hard on the way down and a baby carrier is easier. If you need a child seat, mention it when you book and we will tell you what is possible.

How much walking is there at Ouzoud?

From the top, a paved path lined with cafés and stalls goes down to the foot of the falls in about 20 minutes, then you climb back up. There are steps and slopes, and paths on both banks if you want to walk more. Most people with normal fitness manage it at their own pace.

Is the walk difficult for older travellers?

The way down is easy for most people, the way back up is the tiring part because of the steps and slopes. Take it slowly and stop at the terrace cafés. Tell us about any mobility concerns when you book: on a guided day, the guide adapts the route and the pace to your group.

What is the difference between a driver and a guide?

Your driver drives you there and back and waits while you visit; the driver is not a tour guide. A local guide at Ouzoud walks with you to the falls and viewpoints, explains the site and helps with the boat and lunch. The guide is included in the private tour and optional with transport only.

Do we need a guide at Ouzoud?

No, you can walk to the falls on your own, as the main path is easy to follow. A guide is useful if you want to know the viewpoints, the quieter path on the other bank, help with the boat and lunch, and someone to explain the site and the macaques. Read why a local guide helps.

Can we take a boat ride at the falls?

Yes. Local boatmen run decorated rafts at the foot of the falls for a short ride towards the spray. It runs only when the water level and weather allow. You can add it to your day as an option for €5 per person, and it is included in the premium day. Ask for a life vest before boarding, especially for children.

Where do we have lunch at Ouzoud?

Terrace restaurants on both banks face the falls and serve Moroccan home cooking: tagines, salads, bread and often fruit or mint tea. You can add lunch as an option for €30 per person, and it is included in the premium day. Drinks are not included. Read more on our boat and lunch page.

Can you cater for vegetarians or allergies?

Tell us when you book and we pass your needs to the restaurant: vegetarian, no pork, allergies or simple food for children. Vegetable tagines and salads are always on these menus. The kitchens are small and family-run, so for a serious allergy please remind the staff on the day as well.

Will we see monkeys at Ouzoud?

Very likely. A free-living troop of Barbary macaques lives around the falls and is used to people, so they often come close to the paths and terraces. They are wild animals of an endangered species, so watch them calmly, keep a little distance and keep food out of sight.

Can we feed the macaques?

Please do not. Barbary macaques are listed as Endangered by the IUCN, and research has linked feeding by tourists to stress, aggression and the splitting of the Ouzoud troop. Keep snacks in your bag, do not hold food out to them and avoid sudden movements if they come close.

When is the best time of year to visit Ouzoud?

The falls flow all year. Spring usually has the strongest flow, while the water is lower in late summer. Summer is hot and busy, especially at weekends, and is the season when people swim in the pools. Winter is cooler and quieter, with a chance of rain that can make the paths slippery.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not stop the trip, but paths get slippery and heavy rain can turn the water red-brown and stop the boat rides. If weather makes the trip unsafe, such as a storm or a closed road, you choose between a new date and a full refund of your deposit.

Can we swim at Ouzoud?

People do swim in the pools at the foot of the falls and downstream in summer. Swimming is at your own risk: stay away from the falling water, keep children within reach, and avoid swimming after heavy rain, when the water turns red-brown. Bring a swimsuit and a towel if you plan to.

What should we bring for the day?

Wear walking shoes or sandals with good grip, bring a hat, sun cream, water, a light layer for the spray, cash in small notes for drinks and tips, and your phone in a zip bag. Add a swimsuit in summer and a jacket in winter. No luggage is needed for a day trip.

Should we tip the driver and guide?

Tips are not included in the price and are entirely up to you. If you were happy with your day, a tip for the driver and the guide is appreciated, in cash at the end of the trip. There is no fixed amount and no obligation.

Is the Ouzoud trip safe?

The main path at the falls is well used and you travel with a licensed driver. Take care on wet steps and near the water, keep children close, ask for a life vest on the rafts and do not feed the macaques. If weather makes the trip unsafe, we offer a new date or a refund of the deposit.

Are you a licensed tourist transport company?

Yes. Ouzoud Excursions is operated by Visit Morocco Trips, a Moroccan company holding a tourist transport licence (agrément de transport touristique n° 1550/TOUR/2018), as required in Morocco for road tourist transport. Your vehicle and driver work under this licence, and our full legal details are on the about page.

Can we visit other places on the way?

Tell us when you book what you would like to see. The drive is about 3 hours each way, so a long detour shortens your time at the falls. Nearby sites include the Bin El Ouidane reservoir and the Imi n'Ifri natural arch near Demnate; we confirm what is possible and whether it changes the price before you book.

Is entry to the Ouzoud Waterfalls free?

Yes, there is no entrance fee for the falls themselves. On site you pay only for what you choose: drinks, food, the boat ride and purchases at the stalls, unless they are part of your offer. Our travel guide to Ouzoud covers the site in detail.

Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls worth visiting?

Yes, for most travellers staying in Marrakech. At 110 m in three tiers, Ouzoud is among the highest waterfalls in Morocco, and the visit is more than a viewpoint: a path down the gorge, olive groves, boats at the foot of the falls and Barbary macaques along the way. The only real cost is the drive, about three hours each way, so it fills a full day.

Ouzoud or the Ourika Valley: which is better from Marrakech?

They are different days. The Ourika Valley is closer, about 1 to 1.5 hours away, with small waterfalls reached by a rocky scramble and riverside cafés. Ouzoud is about three hours away but the falls are far bigger, 110 m high, with an easy paved path, boats and macaques. If you have one full day and want the most impressive waterfall, choose Ouzoud; for a shorter or half day, Ourika is easier.

Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls in the Atlas Mountains?

Yes. The falls are in the central High Atlas, in Azilal Province (Béni Mellal-Khénifra region), at about 1,060 m. They are not in Marrakech itself and not in the Ourika Valley: the road from Marrakech is about 150 to 160 km, roughly three hours, heading north-east. The site is also one of the geosites of the M'Goun UNESCO Global Geopark.

Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls in Marrakech or in the Ourika Valley?

Neither. Ouzoud is in Azilal Province, about 150 to 160 km north-east of Marrakech, so you need a full day and a vehicle to get there. The waterfalls of the Ourika Valley, at Setti Fatma, are a different and much closer place. Our trips leave from Marrakech, with pickup at your hotel or at the medina gate nearest to your riad.

How high are the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

The falls are 110 m high in total, falling in three tiers from limestone cliffs into the gorge of the Oued El Abid. Sources disagree on the height of the longest single drop, so we prefer the total figure. The width of the falls is given as about 90 m. The water comes from the Oued Ouzoud, also called Oued Tissakht, fed by a spring a few kilometres upstream.

How many steps are there and how long is the walk at Ouzoud?

There is no official step count, but the main path down to the foot of the falls is paved, with steps and slopes, and takes about 20 minutes going down. The climb back up is slower, so plan double. A full loop across both banks takes about an hour at an easy pace. Good shoes matter more than fitness; with young children or reduced mobility, the guide adapts the route.

Is there a bus from Marrakech to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

There is no direct bus to the falls. Travellers going by public transport usually take a bus or shared grand taxi towards Azilal, then a local taxi for the last part to Ouzoud, which takes much of the day and depends on local timetables. It works for flexible travellers; for a day trip from Marrakech, a private vehicle with driver is far simpler and lets you spend 3 to 4 hours at the falls.

Can I take a taxi from Marrakech to Ouzoud?

City taxis in Marrakech are not made for a 300 km return trip, and a grand taxi hired for the day still needs to be negotiated and does not include waiting time or local knowledge. Our private transport is the organised version of that idea: a licensed tourist vehicle, a driver who waits at Ouzoud while you visit, and a fixed price of €180 for up to 7 people, shown before you pay.

Can I drive to Ouzoud myself, and is there parking?

Yes. The usual route leaves Marrakech on the N8, then follows regional roads to Ouzoud; road numbers can differ between maps, so follow signs for Azilal and Ouzoud. Count about three hours each way. There are parking areas near the top of the site, where attendants usually ask a small fee. With a private driver you avoid the drive and the parking, and can rest on the way back.

How much is the boat ride at Ouzoud?

With us, the boat ride is an option at €5 per person, added to your total when you book, so there is nothing to negotiate on the spot. It is included in the premium private day. The ride only runs when the water level and weather allow it.

Is Ouzoud worth visiting in winter?

Yes. Winter days are cooler and the paths are quieter than in summer, and the falls keep flowing all year because they are fed by a spring. Mornings can be cold at about 1,060 m, so bring a warm layer. After heavy rain the water can turn red-brown and paths can be muddy; if a storm makes the trip unsafe, we offer a new date or a full refund of the deposit.

What is Ouzoud like in summer?

Summer is the busiest season, especially at weekends, and the hottest. It is also when people swim in the pools at the foot of the falls and downstream, at their own risk. Flow is usually lower in late summer than in spring. Leaving Marrakech early, as we do, means reaching the falls before the midday heat and the largest crowds.

Where can I stay near the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

There are small hotels, guesthouses and simple campsites around the top of the falls, which suit travellers who want to see Ouzoud early in the morning or continue towards Azilal or Bin El Ouidane. Our offers are day trips from Marrakech and back, with no overnight stay included. If you plan to sleep at Ouzoud, contact us and we will tell you what we can arrange for the transport.

Ouzoud or Essaouira for a day trip from Marrakech?

Both take about three hours each way, so both fill a full day. Essaouira is a walled port town on the Atlantic, with a medina, a fishing harbour and beaches. Ouzoud is nature: a 110 m waterfall in the High Atlas, a walk down the gorge, boats and macaques. Choose Essaouira for the sea and the town, Ouzoud if you want landscape and a waterfall.

Ouzoud Waterfalls or the Atlas Mountains: which day trip to choose?

Ouzoud is itself in the High Atlas, but the trips are different. Classic 'Atlas Mountains' days from Marrakech go south to valleys such as Imlil or Ourika, closer to the city, with villages and mountain walks. Ouzoud is further north-east and centres on one spectacular site: the 110 m falls, the gorge, the boats and the macaques. If waterfalls are your priority, Ouzoud is the one.

How do you pronounce Ouzoud?

Say it 'oo-ZOOD', with the stress on the second syllable; the French spelling 'ou' is simply the sound 'oo'. The name is traditionally said to mean the grinding of grain in Tamazight, a reference to the small mills along the water, although we have not found a solid source for that meaning.

What is there to do at Ouzoud?

Take in the falls from the viewpoints at the top, walk down the paved path to the foot of the falls, cross to the other bank, take a short boat ride in the spray, have lunch on a terrace facing the water and watch the Barbary macaques from a distance. In summer many people also swim in the pools downstream. Three to four hours on site is enough for all of this at a relaxed pace.

Are the Ouzoud Waterfalls open all year?

Yes. Ouzoud is an open natural site with free access every day of the year, and the falls flow in every season. What changes is the weather: in summer it is hot and busy, in winter cooler and quieter, and after heavy rain the paths can be muddy. If conditions make the trip unsafe on your date, we offer a new date or a full refund of the deposit.

Can I do an Ouzoud day trip from Casablanca or Agadir?

Our trips start and end in Marrakech, which is the closest big city to Ouzoud: about three hours each way. From Casablanca or Agadir the drive is much longer and makes a very long day. If you are staying in another city, the simplest is to plan Ouzoud during your nights in Marrakech; contact us if you have a specific plan in mind.

Should I book Ouzoud on GetYourGuide or Viator, or directly?

Platforms mostly sell shared group tours, with set times and a bus of other travellers. Booking directly with us means a private vehicle for your group only, pickup at your hotel or medina gate, your own pace at the falls, and a fixed price per vehicle shown before you pay. You pay a 50% deposit online and the balance to the driver, with free cancellation up to 48 hours before.

What is there to see between Marrakech and Ouzoud?

The road crosses the Haouz plain and climbs into the first hills of the High Atlas, through farming villages and olive groves. Most travellers simply stop for coffee or photos on the way, which we do on request. Longer detours, such as the Bin El Ouidane reservoir or the natural arch of Imi n'Ifri near Demnate, add time to an already full day; ask us before booking and we will tell you what is realistic.

What should I wear to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

Comfortable shoes with a good grip come first: the path has steps and can be wet near the falls. Wear light clothes in summer with a hat and sun cream, and add a warm layer in winter and in the early morning. Shoulders and knees covered are appreciated in the villages. If you plan to swim, wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a small towel.
