Visiting the Ouzoud Waterfalls with a Local Guide

A local guide at Ouzoud walks with your group from the top of the site to the foot of the falls, choosing the paths, the viewpoints and the pace for you. On our private Ouzoud tour from Marrakech the guide is included, met on arrival, while your driver stays with the vehicle.

from 220 € per vehicleFull day from Marrakech, guided walk during your 3 to 4 hours on siteAround 8:00 at your hotel, or the nearest gate for medina riads

In short

A local guide at Ouzoud walks the site with your group: the viewpoints at the top, the paved path down to the foot of the falls, the crossing to the other bank, the old mills and olive groves, and the places where the Barbary macaques gather, explaining why they should not be fed. The guide adapts the pace on the steps for children or older travellers and helps you find the boats and a good terrace for lunch. A guide is included in our private tour, which costs 220 EUR per vehicle for 1 to 7 people and 330 EUR for 8 to 17. With our private transport only (180 or 250 EUR), you can add a guide for 40 EUR for 1 to 7 people or 80 EUR for 8 to 17. The guide is not the driver: your driver stays with the vehicle near the top of the site. The falls are 110 m high in three tiers and entry is free.

  • Paths on both banks, not only the main path
  • Viewpoints over the three tiers at the right moment
  • Mills, olive groves and the Barbary macaques explained
  • A steady pace and safe footing on the steps
  • Help with the boat ride and a good terrace for lunch
  • Included in the private tour: €220 per vehicle (1 to 7 people), €330 (8 to 17)

The day, step by step

  1. Meet the guide at the top

After the drive from Marrakech, your guide joins the group near the top of the site. You talk about who is walking, how much time you have and what you want to see.

  2. Upper viewpoints

The guide starts where you see the full height of the falls, about 110 m in three tiers, before going down among the cafés and stalls.

  3. Down to the foot of the falls

Down the paved path and steps, with stops at the mills and in the olive groves, and time to watch the macaques from a respectful distance.

  4. Boat, lunch or rest

At the bottom, the guide shows you where the boats leave and which terraces are pleasant, then gives you time to enjoy them.

  5. Back up by the other bank

If the group has energy, you climb back on the opposite side of the gorge for a different view, then meet the driver at the vehicle.

What does a local guide do at Ouzoud?

A local guide at the Ouzoud Waterfalls walks with your group through the site: from the upper viewpoints, down the steps to the foot of the falls, past the mills, and back up, often by the other bank. The guide picks the route and the pace, explains what you see, helps you watch the macaques responsibly and steers you to the boat and a pleasant terrace. On our private Ouzoud tour, this guide is included and meets you on arrival.

Seven things a guide does that a map does not

1. Uses both banks

Most visitors go down the main paved path and come back the same way. Paths run on both sides of the gorge of the Oued El Abid. A guide knows how to link them, so you see the falls from two angles without getting lost or doubling back.

2. Picks the viewpoints

The falls drop about 110 m in three tiers. Some viewpoints show all three; others are close to the spray. The guide chooses the order, depending on the light and the crowds, so you see the full height before you go down.

3. Shows the mills and the valley

Small traditional mills stand along the stream, in an olive-grove setting, and some still work. Ouzoud is traditionally said to take its name from the grinding of grain. A guide points out the mills that most people walk past.

4. Introduces the macaques, responsibly

A troop of Barbary macaques lives around the falls. The species is listed as Endangered by the IUCN. Research at Ouzoud linked food from tourists to more competition and aggression in the troop, and to the group splitting in two. A guide helps you see them at a calm distance, and explains why you should not feed them.

5. Keeps the walk safe

The path has steps and slopes, and the stones near the water can be wet. A guide sets a pace that works for children and older travellers, shows the easier sections, and suggests where to rest. Going down takes about 20 minutes; coming back up takes longer, and that is where a steady rhythm helps.

6. Finds the boat

At the foot of the falls, small rafts take visitors close to the spray. The guide shows you where they leave and helps you get on without fuss. On the premium day, the boat is already arranged.

7. Recommends a good terrace

Many terraces line the path and the bottom of the falls. A guide knows which ones have shade, a view and a calm table, and can suggest dishes. If you prefer lunch already booked, see boat and lunch.

Is a guide worth it at Ouzoud?

A guide is worth it if... You can skip it if...
It is your first visit to Ouzoud You have been before and know the paths
You want to see both banks and several viewpoints You only want to go down, look and come back
You travel with children or older relatives You prefer to wander alone without a schedule
You do not want to deal with offers on the path You enjoy improvising and negotiating on site

If you are in the right-hand column, our private driver offer gives you three to four hours of free time on your own, with the option to add a guide in the booking form for €40 per group (1 to 7 people) or €80 (8 to 17).

How does the guide fit into our tour?

On the private Ouzoud tour, the day is split between two people. Your driver collects you in Marrakech around 8:00, drives about three hours, and waits with the vehicle. Your local guide, from the Ouzoud area, meets you at the top of the site and leads the walk. After the visit, the guide brings you back to the driver for the return to Marrakech in the early evening.

The guide is included in the price of the tour, which is per vehicle for your whole group: €220 for 1 to 7 people, €330 for 8 to 17. Per person, that gives:

Total price by group size
GroupTotal for the groupPer person
1 person220 €220 €
2 people220 €110 €
4 people220 €55 €
6 people220 €36.67 €
7 people220 €31.43 €
8 people330 €41.25 €
12 people330 €27.50 €
17 people330 €19.41 €

Prices in EUR for the whole group, 50% deposit online, balance in cash to the driver on the day.

On the premium private day, the guide is for your group only, with the boat and lunch included for €35 per person on top of the same vehicle price.

What does the guide not do?

To keep expectations clear, a few things are outside the guide's role:

  • The guide does not drive. Your driver handles the road from Marrakech and back, and waits with the vehicle.
  • The guide does not choose for you. You decide whether to take the boat, where to eat and how far to walk; the guide advises.
  • The guide does not feed or handle the macaques, and will ask you not to either.
  • The guide is not a babysitter. Parents stay responsible for their children on the steps and near the water.

Questions to ask your guide

A guided walk is better when it is a conversation. Ask about the mills and how they were used, about daily life in the villages around the falls, about the Oued El Abid gorge below, or about how the site changes between spring and late summer. Ouzoud is also a geosite of the M'Goun UNESCO Global Geopark, so geology questions are welcome.

Before your guided visit

  • Wear shoes with grip and bring a light layer for the spray.
  • Keep snacks in a closed bag near the macaques.
  • Tell us the ages of children and any mobility concerns when you book.
  • Read our Ouzoud travel guide for seasons, what to bring and nearby sites.

Included

  • Local guide at Ouzoud for the walk and viewpoints
  • Private vehicle with driver from Marrakech and back
  • Pickup at your hotel or the nearest point to your riad

Not included

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide to visit the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

No, you can visit alone: the main path down to the foot of the falls is paved and easy to follow. A guide is useful if it is your first visit, if you want to see both banks and the quieter viewpoints, or if you travel with children and want a steady, safe pace. Without one, our private driver offer gives you free time on your own.

What does a local guide do at Ouzoud?

The guide walks with your group for the visit. That means choosing the paths on both banks, taking you to viewpoints over the three tiers, showing the traditional mills and the olive groves, helping you watch the Barbary macaques without feeding them, keeping an eye on footing on the steps, and pointing you to the boat ride and a good terrace for lunch.

Is the guide the same person as the driver?

No. The driver drives you from Marrakech and back and stays with the vehicle. The guide is a separate person from the Ouzoud area who meets you at the falls and walks with you. Keeping the two roles apart means the driver can rest before the drive back, and the guide is free to adapt the walk.

Is a guide included in your Ouzoud tours?

Yes, the local guide is included in the private Ouzoud tour, €220 per vehicle for 1 to 7 people or €330 for 8 to 17, and in the premium private day, where the guide is for your group only. On the private transport offer the guide is an option at €40 per group (1 to 7 people) or €80 (8 to 17).

What should I know about the monkeys at Ouzoud?

The monkeys at Ouzoud are Barbary macaques, an endangered species. They are used to people, and visitors often feed them, but research at Ouzoud links that feeding to more aggression and to the troop splitting. Keep food in your bag, do not touch them and give them space. Your guide shows you where to watch them calmly.

Can people on the path offer to guide us?

Yes, informal guides often offer their services at Ouzoud. Some are helpful, but the price and the route are not agreed in advance. When the guide is part of your booking with us, the price is fixed and paid as part of your trip, and you know who meets you and what is included before you leave Marrakech.

How many steps are there and how long is the walk at Ouzoud?

There is no official step count, but the main path down to the foot of the falls is paved, with steps and slopes, and takes about 20 minutes going down. The climb back up is slower, so plan double. A full loop across both banks takes about an hour at an easy pace. Good shoes matter more than fitness; with young children or reduced mobility, the guide adapts the route.

Ouzoud Waterfalls or the Atlas Mountains: which day trip to choose?

Ouzoud is itself in the High Atlas, but the trips are different. Classic 'Atlas Mountains' days from Marrakech go south to valleys such as Imlil or Ourika, closer to the city, with villages and mountain walks. Ouzoud is further north-east and centres on one spectacular site: the 110 m falls, the gorge, the boats and the macaques. If waterfalls are your priority, Ouzoud is the one.

What should I wear to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?

Comfortable shoes with a good grip come first: the path has steps and can be wet near the falls. Wear light clothes in summer with a hat and sun cream, and add a warm layer in winter and in the early morning. Shoulders and knees covered are appreciated in the villages. If you plan to swim, wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a small towel.
